Omaha Organic Blueberries - About Us

Omaha Organic Berries is a certified organic Blueberry orchard, located an hour North of Auckland New Zealand, by the beach, in Omaha. The orchard is unique in that it has created a wonderful balance between modern technology, organic growing principles and commercial priorities.

The owners Robert and Shannon Auton believe there is a place for quality organic products in a competitive food market, where quality, taste and health are important to the consumer. They are continuing to develop the “oob” brand here in New Zealand and offshore.

The orchard performs two quite distinct roles:
Producing organic fresh and frozen Blueberries and Strawberries for domestic and export markets, as well as manufacturing organic Ice cream, Sorbet and Juice for retail.

Why Blueberries?

Blueberries are one of natures antioxidant powerhouses. The Blueberry has more antioxidant power than almost any other food, including greater than that of Kale and Broccoli. The Blueberry also scores highly on the Orac Index. Blueberries are a natural protector against heart, brain, eye, and age related maledies. Half a cup of Blueberries a day packs the antioxidant punch of 5+ a day of other fruits and vegetables. With a variety of uses, your daily dose of Blueberry goodness can easily be obtained in the  fresh or frozen form.  The sweet tartness of the summertime Blueberry makes them an ideal snack to be gobbled up, or an addition to almost any meal.

Why Organic?

Buying organic is just a simple step toward a healthier and more delicious way of life. Organic food is prepared or grown without use of harsh chemicals or pesticides. Links to cancer and common health problems that are seen everyday can be attributed to eating these chemicals. Organic fruit is likely to be higher in vitamins and minerals as the fruit has not been drained of their goodness through the use of chemicals or genetic engineering. Oob plants are fertilised using organic chicken manure and left to the natural wonders of sunny Omaha. Why NZ Grown?

Fresh, ripe, local, sustainable, and just tastes better- Four of the best reasons we like to buy NZ grown fruit. However, the New Zealand grocery market is ever-so-crowded with fruit from offshore, New Zealanders have very little knowledge of the origin of the fruit they are feeding their families. Unless the retailer is willing to advertise otherwise, many New Zealanders are not aware of where their produce is coming from. Varieties are appearing in seasons where they could not possibly be grown in New Zealand, due to a rise in globalisation. Buying fruit from NZ soil is a sensible social and economic decision. The notion of "cheap fruit" is often perceived as the price you see on the supermarket ticket, however, next time you think you are getting a good deal ask these questions of yourself: Am I buying NZ fruit? Will this cost the world environmentally as a result of being shipped form the northern hemisphere? Will purchasing this fruit support the NZ orchardist, and, as a result the NZ economy?
